The Queen (Wanakasa) is wearing a new dress for her wedding to the King (wanaka) at Knossos! (Click to ENLARGE):
This tablet is one of the more straightforward among those we have been posting with the new ideograms, in this instance the two new ideograms for “cloth”, the blank one which of course simply means “cloth” & the one with TE inside it, which means “finely spun cloth”. The only thing I really need to comment on here is the word TUNANO, which apparently means “(a kind of) dress”, but no one seems quite sure about that. Anyway, what really strikes me about this bizarre word is that it is highly unlikely it is Greek. It could be Minoan, but don’t quote me on that! I checked Dr. John Younger’s excellent all-inclusive repository of Linear A tablets and fragments (there are far far fewer of these than Linear B tablets), and I ran several variants on a search for (something like) TUNANO, but got nowhere. So it would be rash to say the very least that this word is Minoan, but on the other hand...
What do you think? All comments, no matter silly they may seem to you, are more than welcome. After all, no one knows anything about Linear A, so no matter what any of us says, it is either going to sound silly or not, depending on who you are. So who cares anyway?
Oh and BTW, let me know why the right hand side of this tablet is blank. HINT: WETOS or the running year, i.e. the name the Linear B scribes for the fiscal year. Leave your comment and I will tell you what I think the reason is... which is probably right.
PS we have just reached and passed our 400th. (!) post on our blog, a mere two months after we passed our 300th. That is one heck of a lot of posts for a blog that is only 17 months old. And the number of posts is growing steadily with each passing month. At this rate, we will pass 500 posts before the end of 2014, and very likely 650-700 by our second anniversary at the end of April 2015. Quite an achievement, if you ask me. Richard

WOW !! Your computer must be bursting at its seams. Great work !
Ha ha! So true! I think it will probably EXPLODE from a terrible headache! I have been SO inspired of late. I spent something like 24 hours in 2 days getting all this stuff online. This is the MOST productive period I have reached since we started this blog. You may want to know WHY I have so much energy (apart from being bipolar, ha ha!). It is partially because I am in an intensive physical workout program (1 hour per day) 3 to 5 times a week. Also, would you believe it, although I am 69, I look more like 55-60. That is what everybody says! And I do, if you do not mind my saying so (and I know you do not). I have also easily noticed that you do not look YOUR age either! Still doing ball room dancing! I mean, give me a break.
I need to send you some photos of Louis and me. I am SOOOO LAZY when it comes to anything other than Linear B. I watch tons of movies on NETFLIX, and I especially love SCI-FI, war movies (mostly WW II), crime series, historical movies on ANY kind, etc. etc. What about you…. I am dying to know.
Richard
I’m Impressed you even have time for any sort of work out Richard but good for you. There is no ballroom dancing in the area of Crete where we are and this is the only thing we miss . However, we do get a chance now and then where there is a large room at one of our taverna’s near to us if they have a special night on. The owners love it because we attract customers for them but its not very often. We walk whenever we can but as you might guess Crete is very hilly. As for movies, John of course likes the same as you War films. I like ancient warfare films and any Historical Epics. My favourite being BEN HER because my film star idol has always been Charlton Heston whom I have met in person. I am also interested in Native Americans so yes the good old Cowboys and Indians films.
By the way is Lois French and does he share your interest in Linear B ?
Rita.
Oh that is too bad! I bet you would sweep them off their feet, if there were! Aaaah, the Tavernas… I hope you do not get too pissed. Ha ha! Walking is great for your health. You must both be in great shape! I love historical movies of all kinds too. REAL LIFE tragedies such as the execution of Mary of Scotland in the reign of Elizabeth I are FAR MORE interesting than fiction, EVEN William Shakespeare, at least to me. I have watched some historical thrillers at least 5 times!!! As for cowboys and indians, I can see that, especially for Europeans, for whom all that stuff is bizarre. But it just bores the tears out of me. Sorry. No one has exactly the same tastes. Yes, Louis is French and yes, believe it or not, he does share something of an interest in Linear B, because he is an official translator with the Canadian government. He has not learned it, of course, but he just loves our blog, and he DOES understand what mischief I am up to, ha ha.

PS Oh, I forgot. I am slow to get onto Skype, because I am afraid it will blow up in my face. Can you use it without a CAM… I may have one on my computer, but I am unsure… I do have a microphone+headphone set, so if that works, at least we can TALK. I guess it works that way (minus the CAM). Let me know ASAP if it does, and if it does, I will sign up with Skype in a few days and call you. You are going to find me funny as hell. I do not take much of anything seriously, what it the point. Life is too precious and too much FUN for that. I would never do all this stuff if Linear A B & C if I did not think it was fun, which it is! (for you too, I know!) You can often see my nutty sense of humour even in my most serious posts, because again, why take everything seriously, especially something as esoteric and flat-out weird as Linear B. Whenever I tell anyone I am studying Linear B, they say (and you can guess), What the F&*K are you talking about! They must think I am some kind of fruitcake. Well, if they do, I could care less, because I would rather be that than be BORING and dull, as so many people FAR LESS intelligent than you, Gretchen etc. etc. and me on this blog, if you do not mind my saying so. Stupid people bore the bejesus out of me. I am very nice to them, for about 5 minutes, and then I gotta get out of here before MY head explodes, let alone my computer, ha ha!
PS did you send me an e-mail explaining how to put PICS on twitter… sorry to sound so dumb (woops, I was supposed to be so intelligent, but NOT ALL THE TIME. We all need our stupid breaks, eh!) but I have not a clue how to post photos on Twitter so that they appear right away on the screen with each Tweet. I am not swift like you when it comes to things like this (Cf. LAZY above). So you see, we have so much to teach one another!
Your faithful student,
Richard
Hi Richard, I think you and John would get on like a house on fire because he has a funny sense of humour which nobody understands except me. With regard to Skype you can keep your picture on small screen or full screen so don’t worry if a few wrinkles show “I dpn’t ” because the same applies nobody believes I am 80 and I think the secret is because we keep our minds active. I did send you an email explaining about putting pics on twitter but I will explain here as well. When you click on tweet to post there is an icon on your left of a small camera click on that and you will see that you can upload pics from your computer When you have found the one you want just tweet if with a caption if you want to say anything.
I would think you have a webcam in your new computer Richard.
As if!!…. I bet I WOULD UNDERSTAND his sense of humour. Mine is so far out in left field it is astonishing. Louis has a weird sense of humour too, and he and I are always laughing at each other and especially the dumbass movies etc. on TV! OMG! Thanks for the twitter explanation again. I am lost without it, and without YOU!
Think about this one.
What happened to the chicken who was crossing the road, and she got killed… She GOT TO THE OTHER SIDE.
Get it!
ha ha!
